This nine-week course will examine music’s socio-cultural and artistic influence through a deep dive into three of the most famous German composers of all time: Bach, Beethoven, and Schumann. In taking this course, you will emerge with a deep and lasting understanding of the story behind some of the most legendary composers and beautiful musical compositions of all time.
The first three weeks will focus on how J. S. Bach harmonized a large variety of large musical styles into a devout pursuit of musical perfection. We will examine not only the events and inspirations in Bach’s life, but explore Bach’s musical techniques through some of his most influential musical works such as the St Matthew Passion, the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Well-Tempered Clavier.
The next three weeks will be dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven, who created a musical revolution that signaled the transition between classical period and musical romanticism. The course will analyse masterpieces such as his Symphony No. 7, Piano Concerto No. 4, and a selection of Piano Sonatas from throughout Beethoven’s life.
The final three weeks will explore the incredible life and musical contribution of Robert Schumann, who expanded upon Beethoven’s musical revolution by establishing himself as a connecting force between art, culture, and society.
