Lent, at its most basic level, is the traditional fast of forty days before Easter. The first mention of a period of forty days occurs in the Canons of Nicaea, in the year 325. The custom may have originated in the prescribed fast of candidates for Baptism, which in turn was taken from the biblical texts of the fasts of Moses, Elijah and especially the forty days of fasting and wilderness temptation that began Jesus’ ministry. This forum will take us through the season of Lent and into Holy Week. It is my hope that, with Lent and Holy Week better understood, we will be better able to be transformed by it.
