The Collected Vernacular – Thomas Cranmer and the Book of Common Prayer

We will look at the life of Thomas Cranmer and the services in the English language that he translated. Touching briefly on English services prior to the 1549 Book of Common Prayer (The Exhortations and Litany), we will focus on the 1549 and 1552/1559 BCP’s, with special focus on the Collects written by Cranmer, all set against the background of England under three Tudor monarchs: Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary.
